The Raoul Wallenberg Institute is hosting the Annual Conference of the Association of Human Rights Institutes (AHRI) in 2024 in Lund, it will focus on "Human Rights in a Polarized World - Realizing Human Rights in the Green and Just Transition." Human rights are facing unprecedented challenges in a polarized world, where tensions and divisions create significant barriers to their realization. Against this backdrop, the conference will explore the pressing challenges of realizing human rights in a world marked by increasing polarization, where social, economic, political, and environmental transitions are occurring at an unprecedented pace. Ensuring, at the same time, a transition towards a green and just society is particularly relevant in this context. The conference will investigate how the transition to a more sustainable and equitable society can be achieved through the protection of human rights.

📢New publication alert📢 I am pleased to share this new article of mine, entitled 'Active Ageing’ Under International Law: The Localization of a Human Rights-Based Approach and published in the latest issue ofDiritti umani e diritto internazionale. It is the outcome of my research fellowship at the University of Turin Department of Law in 2023, within the project ‘International levers and local implementation of active ageing rights’. I am most grateful to Lorenza Mola and Giovanni Boggero for their utmost support and guidance, as well as to the Council of Europe Department of Social Rights for supporting the research.📌 Link to publisher's website: https://lnkd.in/dX4qPGc6📌 Link to preprint: https://lnkd.in/dmk9HpMaAbstract: Active ageing is considered to be one of the prevalent policy responses to the unprecedented challenge of global ageing, embracing a holistic, life course-oriented perspective based on the recognition of the human rights of older persons and intergenerational solidarity. In practice, however, active ageing policies have been criticized for being dominated by a narrow economic or productivist and paternalistic perspective. Remarkably, human rights issues relating to age and ageing are dealt with on an everyday basis by local authorities within a state, while trends of decentralization and urbanization, particularly across Europe, have shifted the responsibility for delivering many public services towards older persons to the local level. Against this background, in this Article I examine whether international human rights law endorses a human rights-based approach to active ageing and encompasses active ageing elements. At the same time, I address the question whether there exists a connection between international human rights law and local government action on active ageing, especially considering the growing interest in the roles that local governments play in the application and enforcement of universal and regional human rights treaties in recent years. In that context, I pay particular attention to the Council of Europe’s European Social Charter in combination with the European Charter for Local Self-Government and the work of their monitoring bodies, to assess whether international law provides a legal framework for implementing active ageing rights and policies at the local level.#ageing #activeageing #olderpersons #internationallaw #localauthorities #humanrights #socialrights #EuropeanSocialCharter #EuropeanCharterofLocalSelfGovernmentCouncil of Europe Human Rights and the Rule of Law VARFI-BOEHRER Irida

Delighted to have attended an insightful live dialogue on International Law, marking the 125th anniversary of The Hague as the International City of #Peace and #Justice, hosted by The Hague Humanity Hub.It was enlightening to explore diverse perspectives on the current challenges and opportunities within this nexus. As a feminist economics researcher, I pointed out the importance of integrating care into legal frameworks. In our pursuit of peace and justice, it's crucial to recognize care as the essence of democracy, also, the concept of care emphasizes the power dynamics inherent in international law. By centering care, we challenge existing power relations and strive for more equitable legal structures that prioritize the well-being of all beings. Additionally, incorporating care towards humans and non-humans aligns with the Sustainable Development Agenda, highlighting the interconnectedness of social, economic, and environmental aspects. Let's continue advocating for a world where care is prioritized in all our endeavors. 🌱💕#InternationalLaw #HumanRights #FeministEconomics #CareEthics #SustainableDevelopment #PeaceAndJustice #TheHague125 #GlobalDialogue #multispeciesjustice

Pleased to have a book review published with theAustralian Journal of Human Rights (UNSW Australian Human Rights Institute). I review the volume, Research Handbook on the Politics of Human Rights Law, edited by Bård A. Andreassen. Among other topics, I- Discuss Andreassen's helpful overview of the interaction between law and politics in the field of international human rights- Engage with Steven LB Jensen's chapter to suggest how knowledge of history can be important for lawyers in practice- Explain why Philip Alston's chapter on the rights of people living in poverty 'deserves serious consideration from anyone who works on human rights'https://lnkd.in/g4JYyWwa

Let's think about the future of human rights with the help of International Law Association's White paper on Human Rights (https://lnkd.in/dE8FRS4z ). One of the challenges identified is the non-application of human rights law. "Without strong and committed national structures and actors, obligations under international law can easily remain a dead letter." In this respect, NHRIs have a key role to play. Their commitment, independence and effectiveness are acknowledged as a powerful tool. "In the first place, internal control is essential, thanks to the independent commitment of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRI) which are nothing less than the essential watchdogs of effective human rights protection within states. Their scope of action, their organization and their financing should be profoundly improved." #nhri #humanrights #talkaboutthefuture
